They'd be traveling for the same reasons people have always traveled.
Curiosity, looking for new (empty) lands to settle or "new" inhabited lands
to trade with, or fleeing human enemies or disastrous climate changes.

There wouldn't have been much trade at all between South America and
Polynesia. No doubt about that.
