for all the linguists out there looking for the "possible" 
proto-Language? root word for MAIZE

one possibility to consider might be Latvian MIZA meaning???.....

"hull, skin", i.e. a hulled plant, a grain. 
as root in NUO-ZALE "of the green" > MIZALE > MAIZE(LE)> MAIZE.
